In 2013, the Carnegie Center for Art & History will celebrate the tenth anniversary of Form, Not Function: Quilt Art at the Carnegie, an exhibition exploring the world of contemporary art quilts. This annual, juried exhibit draws works of art by artists across the United States and celebrates innovation and creative thought in the increasingly popular medium of art quilts. It has grown over the years from the first exhibition in 2004, organized thanks to the efforts of the River City Fiber Artists, to the 2012 exhibition that received 278 entries from 36 states. As a celebration of the tenth anniversary of Form, Not Function, a catalogue will be printed for the 2013 exhibition. We have also planned a “Summer of Fiber Art” for 2013 with Form, Not Function followed by an exhibition of artworks by the members of the Louisville Area Fiber and Textile Artists that will be on view July 26 – October 5, 2013.
Each year, a variety of quilts in the Form, Not Function exhibition are recognized for their excellence through the presentation of awards. We are happy to announce a new $500 Award of Excellence in memory of textile artist Alma Lesch, sponsored by the DELvelopment Foundation. For the next five years, this award will be added to the others, which include: the Carnegie Center, Inc. $1,000 Best of Show prize, a $300 Award of Excellence presented by River City Fiber Artists, a $200 Award of Excellence presented by the Louisville Area Fiber and Textile Artists, a $100 Award for Political and Social Commentary, a $100 Inspired by Nature Award and a $50 Visitors’ Choice Award, as well as additional Merit Awards sponsored by local individuals and organizations with an interest in the fiber arts. The Carnegie Center is pleased to have Sue Cavanaugh, Pat DaRif and Lisa L. Kriner as jurors for the 2013 Form, Not Function exhibition. In addition to selecting the works for the exhibit, they will also select some of the exhibition awards.
2013 Jurors
Sue Cavanaughis a full-time studio artist. Her work has been in Quilt National, Visions, the Columbus Museum of Art, and the Zanesville Museum of Art. In 2008 she was awarded Best of Show at the Shibori Cut Loose exhibit at the Textile Center in Minneapolis. Cavanaugh is a two-time recipient of the Lynn Goodwin Borgman Award for Surface Design and was awarded a 2012 Dresden artist residency by the Greater Columbus Arts Council and the Free State of Saxony. She is represented by Circle Gallery, German Village, Columbus, Ohio, and gráficas gallery, Nantucket, Massachusetts. Her website is www.suecavanaughart.com
Pat DaRif is a fiber artist, based in Louisville, Kentucky, whose work has appeared in many national juried exhibitions. For nearly twenty years she has been active in fiber art organizations in her community, working to promote understanding of and appreciation for the medium. DaRif was employed for almost forty years in the field of social services, the last twenty-eight as an Administrative Law Judge for the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration. Since retiring in 2009, she has been thrilled to be able to create art on a full-time basis.
Lisa L. Kriner is an Associate Professor and Director of Visual Arts at Berea College in Kentucky. She earned her BS in Textile Technology at North Carolina State University and her MFA in Fibers at The University of Kansas. Kriner’s fiber art visually explores the formation of identity through tensions between being rooted in community and the desire for personal movement and freedom. Her work is shown nationally, in solo, invitational, and juried exhibitions and appears in The Fiberarts Design Book #7, published by Lark Books and Soil and Culture, edited by E. Landa and C. Feller.
