Billy Keith Solar Art Demonstration

Saturday, April 6, 2024

10:00 am-2:00 pm

The 2024 Total Solar Eclipse is a cosmic event the Southern Indiana area has been anticipating and which will occur soon on April 8th. While supplies last, the Floyd County Library will be giving away eclipse glasses for safe viewing at its three branch locations.

With a big interest in all things sun-related, join us at the Floyd County Carnegie Library Cultural Arts Center on Saturday, April 6th, two days before the eclipse, and meet solar artist, Billy Keith. For the past 14 years, this Louisville self-taught artist has been using a variety of magnifying lenses in a collaboration with the sun to create his pyrographic visions on wood. Wearing welding goggles, Keith focuses the sun into a white hot point of light with intensity often reaching 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. The artist directs the beam, in laser-like fashion, as he draws and burns his idea into the surface of the wood. There is a strong performative aspect to the creation of Keith’s artwork as he employs large, Fresnel lenses from old, rear-screen, projection televisions to make his unusual, green art. Building on recent successes, Billy and his wife Michele just opened the Sun Shop on Louisville’s East Broadway to sell what they made while the sun shined.

Regardless of April 6th’s weather conditions, Billy Keith will be at the Cultural Arts Center to hopefully demonstrate his art form and share some of the work he has created with the sun. Visitors to the 2024 NAFC Secondary Schools Art Show on display inside the museum will have the opportunity, weather permitting, to meet the artist and try this art form for themselves with help and materials provided by the artist. We hope to see you and the sun… on Saturday, April 6, 2024. Free to the public, no registration required.
